Programmed Intermittent Epidural Boluses (PIEB) is a recent, innovative approach to pain management, particularly in obstetric and surgical settings. This technique delivers epidural analgesia by administering intermittent boluses of local anesthetic and opioid solutions via an indwelling catheter at predetermined, programmed intervals.. Background and Aims The PIEB technique is a promising approach that demonstrates certain advantages over traditional techniques epidural analgesia. We compared the incidence of motor block (MB) in women who received PIEB or traditional techniques for maintenance of labor analgesia. Methods We studied 145 subjects. Term women with spontaneous labor and cervical dilation > 1-2cm were eligible.

Introduction: Programmed intermittent epidural bolus (PIEB) is a protocol for epidural analgesia in which a bolus dose is automatically given at a designated interval. It is not widely adopted in the UK. In the last decade, evidence of the advantages of PIEB in labour has emerged including less breakthrough pain,1 less motor block due to local anaesthetic sparing,2 fewer instrumental.. PIEB versus CEI PIEB alone was compared to CEI alone. The evidence was mixed in terms of anaesthetist reattendance for breakthrough pain and motor block, with some of the evidence showing an important benefit for PIEB, and some showing no evidence of an important difference between groups.
